Sambhar is a delicious south Indian soup dish made with lentils and vegetables served with different snacks like idli, vada, dosa etc. A special spice powder sambhar masala is added.

Ingredients

  • Toor dal 1 cup
  • Tamarind pulp 2 tablespoons
  • Shallots 5-6 units
  • Drumsticks 1 units
  • Tomato(finely chopped) 3 units
  • Coriander powder 2 teaspoons
  • Red chilli powder 2 teaspoons
  • Sambhar masala 1 tablespoons
  • Mustard seeds 1 teaspoons
  • Curry leaves 5-6 units
  • Salt as per taste
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoons
  • Methi seeds 1/2 teaspoons
  • Hing 1/4 teaspoons
  • Ghee 2 tablespoons
  • Dried red chilli 2 units

Instructions

  • Wash toor dal and soak for 1 hr.
  • Pour 2 cups water in pressure cooker, add toor dal, turmeric powder and salt.
  • Pressure cook for 3 whistles on medium flame. The dal need to be cooked till smooth.
  • Scrap the drumstick and chop them in two pieces.
  • Peel the shallots and cut into two.
  • Now take a cooking pot, add ghee to it.
  • When ghee gets hot, add mustard seeds, methi seeds, dried chili, curry leaves and hing.
  • When seeds crackle add onion ,ginger and sauté.
  • Now add chopped tomatoes, drumsticks, red chili powder, sambhar masala, coriander powder and sauté well.
  • When tomatoes get pulpy, add cooked dal to it and add required amount of water.
  • Stir it, now add tamarind pulp and salt to it. Stir well and let it boil for few minutes.
  • Your Sambhar is ready to be served.

Notes/Tips

You can also add chopped veggies like carrot, bottle guard to it as per taste and to make it more health.
