Basically a spiced and a healthy yoghurt or curd based drink which is typically served during the scorching summer heat to reduce the body temperature and to give a soothing effect. This buttermilk is spiced with mint, coriander leaves, ginger, cumin powder and with a pinch hing or asafoetida.

  • Hung curd - 2 cups
  • Coriander leaves - 1/2 cup
  • Mint leaves - 1/2 cup
  • Ginger - a pinch
  • Cumin powder - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - as required
  • Asafoetida - 1/4 teaspoon
  • Green Chilly - 1/2
  • Lemon - single squeeze

Instructions

  • Take 2 cups of hung curd (Hung curd is simply curd whose whose whey has been drained completely).
  • Whisk them well by adding salt to it.
  • In a mixer, add coriander leaves, mint, chilly, ginger. Grind them well till you get a fine paste, if not add a spoon of water and mix them.
  • Now add the paste to the whisked hung curd and add cumin powder to it and mix them well.
  • Finally squeeze half a lemon into the thick buttermilk, mix them well. Strain it.
  • Garnish it with a leafy coriander and a little amount of cumin powder to the bowl!
  • Suprise your loved ones with a glass of super cool masala buttermilk.
  • Masala buttermilk is one summer drink which you can make even in advance. Make it ahead and keep it refrigerated till ready to serve. It tastes best when chilled. Stay cool and enjoy this recipe! xx

Notes/Tips

Note: Use only hung curd (so that you don't get missed out to feel the creamy consistency of the buttermilk. One more reminder, never add the hung curd to a mixer. Whisk them, with your hands( To avoid it becoming too watery). Making this does not require any special skills, all you need is to whisk them well. You just have to mix everything together till combined and then pour into glasses and enjoy. It’s that simple!
