Eco-Friendly Food Practices
While the entire world pledges to save the biodiversity here are some eco-friendly practices which Foodism recommends to save the planet –
- Go vegetarian for a day and save on the huge amounts of water, food, land, fuel, pesticides and energy involved in raising livestock
- Try giving your electric and gas bill a break by having a raw meal once in a week
- Be a green warrior and grow your own food whether in your backyard or even apartment balcony! This reduces the pollution and energy that goes into shipping vegetables and fruits
- Replace non-stick coating utensils with cast iron, ceramic and glass
- Eat local and not only support your farmers but also radically cut down on food miles
- Instead of tossing food leftovers into your dustbin, start decomposing them in your backyard
- Opt for eating organic as its planet and health-friendly; because it doesn’t use chemical fertilizers or pesticides which are harmful for the environment, the soil or body
- Repurpose your scraps from carrots, potatoes, onions, cauliflower, celery and lemons and reduce the food waste that comes out of your kitchen
- Opt for consuming sustainable fish and save the oceans
- Reduce your ecological footprint by storing food in reusable glass containers and dried goods in glass jars
- Prevent food waste by becoming a food prep master – keep fruits and vegetables in ready-to-cook form; chop them and store them in airtight containers in the refrigerator; wrap a damp cloth around fresh herbs; store asparagus like a bouquet of flowers; et al
- When grocery shopping - carry your own reusable tote bag
A few simple steps can go a long way in saving your carbon footprint
